Leave Saraki alone, group warns labour unions
A group, Nigerian People's Forum, has warned the Nigeria Labour Congress and other labour unions to leave Senate President Bukola Saraki alone.
The group said this in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Taiwo Olayemi, while reacting to calls by the organised labour unions that Saraki should resign because he is facing trial before the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
The forum said it was ironic that the NLC could attempt to intervene in the Senate crisis when the NLC has been factionalised due to an internal crisis. It, therefore, called on the NLC to handle its own crisis before attempting to intervene in the Saraki issue.
The group also wondered how Saraki's trial before the CCT concerned labour unions which should be preoccupied with the welfare of Nigerian workers. The statement read in part, "It is most unfortunate that the factionalised labour unions who have not been able to resolve their internal crisis have suddenly found the voice of a faction to comment on this sensitive matter.
"The Nigerian public should only recognise the President of the NLC and other executives who were duly elected in office: Ayuba Waba. Any other factional leader has no legal authority to issue any statement. They are entitled to their personal opinion but the public should not be misled as the opinion of the NLC and Nigerian workers."
