Houses, Cars Submerged As Ilorin River Overflows

Property worth millions of naira were destroyed in Ilorin, Kwara State, following flood in parts of the city. The flood was caused by the Thursday rainfall which lasted till Friday morning. Daily Trust gathered that residents of Okin Complex along Offa Garage area Omoseebi, Atikeke, Adisco, Royal Shekinah Grand Suite, Pipeline, Gaa Akanbi, Offa Garage, Unity, Cocacola in the metropolis, were the most affected by the disaster.

According to residents of the area, the incident was caused by Atikeke River, which overflowed its bank. Our correspondent reports that houses, vehicles, electric poles and other valuable items were destroyed.

The Ajase-Ipo road was also heavily flooded, leading to a gridlock which lasted for hours.

A victim of the disaster, Mr Olawepo Bashir, appealed to government agencies to stop approving structures close to river banks.

"This is a recurring disaster. I call on the town planning development authority not to approve any building beside the river because those buildings caused the problem we have now", he said.

Also speaking, Mr Augustine Okoli called for the channelization of Atikeke river to allow free flow of water. He also called on government to check indiscriminate building of houses along the river bank.
