APFON wants Yekini immortalised
President of the Association of Professional Footballers of Nigeria, Dahiru Sadi has called on the federal government through the Nigeria Football Federation to immediately immortalise late Super Eagles striker, Rashidi Yekini.
Yesterday was the second anniversary of Nigeria's all time highest goals scorer who died on May 4, 2012 at the age of 48.
Most Nigerian football fans believe he has not been given his due honour for meritorious service to the country.
Apart from being Nigeria's highest goals scorer, Yekini would be remembered for scoring Nigeria's first World Cup goal in 1994 in the USA against Bulgaria.
Thus, Sadi who spoke to Daily Trust yesterday on behalf of Nigerian footballers, said the legendary Yekini deserves to be immortalised yet there is nothing to keep him in the memories of Nigerians.
He said it is not too late for the former Africa Sport National and Vitoria Setubal of Portugal striker to be immortalised by having a national edifice named after him.
Sadi, a former Super Eagles player said if immortalised, the honour would spur the present players to give their best for the country.
"On behalf of Nigerian football players, I am calling on the federal government through the NFF to immortalise Rashidi Yekini.
"The history of football in the country will be incomplete without a mention of this legend but since his demise nothing has been done to immortalise him.
"Naming an edifice like the Liberty stadium Ibadan after him will not be a bad idea. At least there is late Sam Okwaraji's statue in front of the national stadium in Lagos.
"If Yekini is immortalised, the honour will certainly spur on the present generation of players to give their best for the country," he said.
