Governor Bukola Saraki pledges credible election

Date: 2010-07-18

Kwara State Governor, Dr Bukola Saraki has reiterated that his administration would not interfere in the conduct of the forthcoming Local Government election in the State just as he pledged to ensure a credible council poll.

He gave the assurance on Wednesday while inaugurating a new member of the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC), Engineer Saka Mustapha, whom he charged to bring his wealth of experience to bear in his new assignment.

This is in preparation for the forthcoming Local Government election in the State which the State Independent Electoral Commission has fixed for October 30 this year.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Saraki, who congratulated Engr. Mustapha on his well deserved appointment, noted that his appointment was based on merit, sterling qualities, track record of achievements and satisfactory past performances in his chosen career and enjoined him to sustain the attributes.

"As you are aware, the assignment before you is tasking and challenging. It will among others, put to test your patience, endurance and perseverance", the governor said.

He charged members of the Commission to be up and doing and rise to the challenge of conducting the forthcoming Local Government election in such a manner that credible leaders would emerge.

The governor also tasked the electoral body to midwife a free and fair election into the local government system that would meet international minimum standard, stressing that the Commission should carry out its assignment according to due process.

Dr. Saraki, however, declared that his administration will not in any way tamper with the running of the Commission’s activities and assured it of his support and necessary logistic support towards a credible local government election.

He called on the people of the State to cooperate fully with the agency in the discharge of its responsibilities, pointing out that the Commission cannot do it all alone.

Responding, Engr. Mustapha, on behalf of his family and the entire people of Moro, thanked the governor for the opportunity given him to serve the State and promised to justify the confidence reposed in him.
