Dangote driver docked for causing death
A driver with Dangote Cement Company, Tanimu Shuaibu, who allegedly caused a collision with a commercial bus which resulted into the death of a passenger, has been arraigned before an Ilorin Magistrate Court.
The 40-year-old accused of Oba Jana, Lokoja, Kogi State, was brought before the court on a one-count charge of causing death by dangerous driving, contrary to Section 23 of Road Traffic Law (RTL).
The accused been the driver in-charge of Sino trailer with registration number BUJ 23 XA on September 7, 2014 allegedly drove dangerously along Ajase-Ipo Road, after ARMTI Bridge, Kwara State, without due consideration to other road users. The accused was said to have left his vehicle on the highway at night without any traffic signs, which caused an on-coming Hiace bus with registration XB 643 FUF driven by Asimiyu Afolabi of Offa-Garage to hit the trailer from the rear.
According to the Police First Information Report (FIR) on the matter stated that the said bus got damaged beyond repair, while one Amadu Salisu Kano died on the spot and the other seven passengers including the driver sustained various degrees of injuries.
The FIR added that the victims were rushed to Yusjib Hospital for treatment, while four of them were admitted.
The prosecutor, Inspector Godwin Asua, who informed the court that investigation into the matter was still ongoing, urged the court to adjourn the case till further date to enable the police complete their investigation.
He also left the issue of bail of the accused to the discretion of the court. The defence counsel, Barrister Tolu Adekola prayed the court to admit the accused to bail since the 1999 Constitution of the Federation of Nigeria still presumed the accused innocent of the allegation until proved otherwise.
Magistrate J.B. agreed with the defence councel and released the accused on bail at the sum of N200,000 and two sureties in the same amount and adjourned the case till November 11, 2014 for further mention.
