FG endorses Kwara State Education Reform Agenda for the nation's education industry

Date: 2010-10-25

The education reforms programme embarked upon by the Kwara State government has been endorsed by the Federal Government for the nation’s education industry.

The National Commission of Colleges of Education (NCCE) who gave the endorsement described the reform agenda as a beacon for the country’s education sector.

The Commission in a commendation letter addressed to the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Alhaji Bolaji Abdullahi and signed by the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Professor Mohammed Ibn Junaid signified its intention to use the reform agenda at College of Education, Oro as a pilot scheme to develop its accreditation instruments.

Prof. Junaid, who commended the State Government for the success story, noted that the reform programme had placed Oro College of Education ahead of other colleges in its preparedness for accreditation programmes.

NCCE, he said, sees the reforms at Oro College of Education not only from the point of view of the needs of Kwara State, but also as a beacon for the rest of Nigeria.

"We all know that  the quality of basic education in Nigeria must be improve upon as a matter of urgency, that is what has motivated NCCE in its current reform", the letter reads.

According to the Executive Secretary, the commission viewed the Oro experiment as an important part of the broader reform programme that would enhance the credibility of the commission’s commitment to teachers’ education reform programme in Nigeria.

The commission, he noted, would discuss the draft instrument with the college staff to obtain feedback on their suitability and undertake a pilot visitation to ascertain NCCE’s ability to undertake accreditation exercise using the new instrument.
