Retirement Age - NASU Tackles State Govts
Members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, (NASU), have alleged refusal by some states' governments to implement the 65 years retirement age Act in favour of all the non-teaching staff in their tertiary institutions.
The NASU Friday, in a communiqué jointly signed by its National President, Mrs Ladi IIiya, and General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Ilorin, said no state could declare the national directive on the retirement age a cumbersome act to implement.
According to the 21-point communiqué, "NEC-in-Session while appreciating the signing into law of the Universities Miscellaneous Provision Amendment Act, 2012 and the (Harmonisation) Act, 2012 for the Polytechnics and Colleges of Education by the Federal Government, regretted that up to the time of this meeting, most state- owned institutions are yet to implement the Act.
"NEC-in-Session therefore called on state governments to expedite action and implement the 65 years retirement age Act in favour of all the non-teaching staff in their tertiary institutions."
In specific terms, the NASU sharply criticised the alleged plan by the governments of Rivers, Bauchi and Benue to cut the salaries of workers of the state-owned establishments, warning that the plan, if not discarded would throw up serious labour crisis of unimaginable proportion which could consume the existing relative industrial harmony in those states.
