Breast cancer burden can affect family unit - Kwara gov's wife

Date: 2014-08-14

Wife of the Kwara State governor and founder, Life Empowered Anchors Hope (LEAH) charity foundation, Mrs Omolewa Ahmed, has raised the alarm that the burden of breast and cervical cancer on Nigerian women can affect love and strength of a family unit in many communities.

Speaking at the premiere of a TV series on breast and cervical cancer, entitled: S'ayewo in Ilorin, on Wednesday, Mrs Ahmed said that statistics had showed that one woman died from breast cancer every minute, and that cervical cancer killed one Nigeria woman every hour.

Mrs Ahmed who said that the TV series was another tool that her foundation hoped to use to reinforce efforts in sensitising the general public about the diseases, stressed that: "As we all know, the re-enactment of reality drama is one of the easiest ways in which human beings are able to internalise messages."

She, therefore, pleaded with individuals and organisations in the country to join in the crusade of saving the lives of women, adding that the foundation intended to establish a purpose-built hospital, "which would provide treatment to save lives of breast and cervical cancer patients."

She said initiatives on awareness and prevention against breast and cervical cancer was important, adding that research had showed that one-third of all cancer cases were preventable with early diagnosis and treatment.

She said her LEAH charity foundation had set up 27 basic screening centres in 11 local government areas of the state, noting that the facilities were manned by qualified personnel.
