Kwara begins demolition to prevent flooding

Date: 2014-05-03

The Kwara State government, on Friday, began mass demolition of buildings vulnerable to flooding in Ilorin metropolis.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the action was part of government's plan to clear the water ways and avert perennial flooding.

The state Town Planning and Development Authority has marked the affected houses for demolition.

NAN also reported that major houses to be affected are those built close to river banks and channels.

Some areas to be affected in the first phase of the demolition exercise will include some buildings in Omosebi, Gaa-Akanbi, Pipeline and Royal Shekinah Hotels areas.

Dr Abubakar Amuda-Kannike, the Chairman, State Task Force on Flood Control and Prevention, said the state government would begin to demolish the houses that had been identified by the town planning authority to save lives and properties.
