Independent Power Plant: Kwara sets to generate 100 megawatts
Kwara State Governor, Dr Abdulfatah Ahmed has reinstated his administration's commitment to the establishment of an Independent Power Plant (IPP) that will ultimately generate 100 megawatts of electricity.
Governor Ahmed, who gave this commitment when the first lady, Mrs. Omolewa Ahmed led a delegation of women professionals and associations on a courtesy visit on him at Government House, Ilorin, added that the IPP was expected to generate initial 30 megawatts annually for use by hospitals, educational institutions, business concerns in line with his administration's Shared Prosperity programme of ensuring human capital development and industrial growth.
The Governor assured the women that his administration will continue to create an enabling environment for their growth and economic prosperity as they are also beneficiaries of the N450m artisans' loan scheme initiated by his administration. Dr. Ahmed promised that more women would be appointed into political offices in furtherance of the gender affirmative action.
Meanwhile, wife of the Governor, Mrs Omolewa Ahmed, in her remarks, called for the passage of a law against domestic violence to protect women and children against rape and other forms of violence.
Mrs Ahmed, who expressed concern that incidents of domestic violence against women in the country were unacceptably on the high, promised that her foundation would embark on an advocacy campaign to all parts of the State on domestic violence against women and children.
Mrs Ahmed commended the State Government for its women and children friendly programmes such as qualitative education, healthcare and youth employment, adding that the women folk in the State appreciated the appointment and election of women into different positions in the State.
