'APC to take over Reps majority leader, other positions'
The spokesman for the House of Representatives has disclosed that the House would effect leadership changes to reflect the current political realities in the chamber, following defections from the ruling PDP.
Mr. Zakari Mohammed (APC, Kwara) said the positions that would be affected to include Majority Leader, Deputy House Majority Leader, Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip.
The changes, he said, were necessary as a result of the growing number of members of the APC in the House which has now made the PDP a minority party.
Mohammed himself, along with 36 other members of the PDP, defected late last year to the APC.
Speaking with newsmen in Kaiama, Kwara State after meeting some politicians in the area, the House spokesman said more members would defect to the APC this week, thereby giving the House the strength to effect the changes.
The changes, he said, would not however include positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker, saying those positions are constitutional.
He said another set of 10 PDP members is set to defect to the APC as soon as the House reconvenes.
He said, "As it stands today, as I talk to you now, we have APC 172, and PDP is 167 and the rest 20 to 22 belong to the other parties.
"So for me, I believe that by the special grace of God when we resume we are going to have other members coming to the APC.
"Then the positions of the Majority Leader, Deputy Majority Leader, Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip will be re-positioned to the APC. We have about 10 members who are coming into the APC as soon as we resume on Tuesday, January 21."
