Nigeria: Don Urges Decentralisation of ASUU
A don, Dr. Alex Akanmu, has called for the decentralisation of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to stop the incessant strikes in the country.
Akanmu of the Department of Science Education, University of Ilorin, advocated different academic staff unions for the various universities in Nigeria.
Speaking with Daily Trust, he said academic union of federal universities should be known as Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities (ASUFU) while state varsities should have Academic Staff Union of State Universities (ASUSU). "This will help in separating issues and treating them on their merit", he said.
He lamented that a number of state universities joined the six months strike embarked upon by ASUU when they were not "directly affected" by the issues raised by ASUU national leadership.
The don further noted that private universities should also have their own union to be known as Academic Staff Union of Private universities (ASUPU) to avoid a situation where lecturers would hold their proprietors to ransom.
According to him, the decentralisation would prevent total shut down of universities as witnessed during the just suspended strike. He decried the prolonged ASUU strike, noting that apart from forcing universities to restructure their calendar, the strike had also affected the standard of graduates the universities churn out due to limited time to cover the curriculum.
