Expect tsunami in PDP soon - Ali Ahmad

Date: 2013-12-23

The Chairman, House Committee on Judiciary in the House of Representatives, Dr Ali Ahmad, has predicted more dooms in the crisis-ridden Peoples Democratic Party, saying the party should expect a devastating "tsunami" in the weeks ahead.

He revealed that over 40 of his colleagues in the hallowed chamber would between January and February next year join the All Progressives Congress.

Ahmad alongside other 36 House members elected on the platform of the PDP last Wednesday formally announced their defection to the APC in a letter addressed to the Speaker Aminu Tambuwal, which was read at the plenary session.

The development increased the numerical strength of the APC in the House with simple majority of 172 members against PDP which now has 171.

Briefing journalists in Ilorin at the weekend on the issues arising from the defection, Ahmad blasted the PDP for threatening members who dumped the party, saying they were ignorant of the law.
The lawmaker, who was a one-time Dean, Faculty of Law of the University of Ilorin, vowed that the defected legislators would return to the PDP fold.

He said, "You can see PDP is still day-dreaming. When you have 37 members formally defecting controlling majority of the house, you could hear them with different kinds of stories. Most of them go to the villa that the reason we are defecting is because we want to this or do that. We are in the majority but we still left majority house in the hand of PDP. It is good but this one we can now determine the pace, we can wake up one day if we are not satisfied and we change it. The fact is that we are de facto majority now.

"They've not seen anything yet. With 37, over 40 are defecting now. They should forget us, we are not coming back. If they have political sagacity, they should know what to do. Our colleagues, about 40 of them are coming in January and February".

Ahmad, who represents Ilorin East/South Federal Constituency from Kwara State, said that with their defection, PDP is now a minority party in Kwara state, stressing that those who remain in PDP are power hungry people who could not make any impact as PDP members in the state.

"The influence that those people who say they would not follow us to APC have is what you should look. You have some people whose total ambition in coming to politics is to lead. Those people cannot follow us and we don't even want them because they would dilute our merger since all they want is power. That's not what we want.

"There's no way even if you are in a 10-member family, and you want to move from Ilorin to Lagos, you would see one or two members that would say they are not following you. The influence that those people who say they would not follow us to APC have is what you should look.

"You have some people whose total ambition in coming to politics is to lead. Those people cannot follow us and we don't even want them because they would dilute our merger since all they want is power. That's not what we want.

"And you find those people at all levels either as Senators, House of Representatives members, governors, chairmen of local government chairmen, they are all there. I won't deny they are not there. But when you look at them, they are in the minority", the Lawmaker declared.
