Mark averts clash between Senators Saraki, Nenadi Usman Over comments on FCC confirmation
SENATE President David Mark prevented what could have resulted into a brawl between Senators Bukola Saraki and Esther Nenadi Usman on the floor of the Senate, on Tuesday.
The bone of contention between the duo was the comment by Nenadi Usman, last Thursday, during the confirmation of President Goodluck Jonathan’s nominees for appointment into the Federal Character Commission (FCC).
Senator Usman had, during the confirmation exercise, urged other senators not to support Saraki in his opposition to the confirmation of Professor Abdulraheem Oba’s re-appointment as the FCC boss, alleging that Saraki’s stand was borne out of mischief.
She claimed that Saraki recorded the discussion of the meeting he had with the nominee and sent it through his Blackberry Messenger to his constituents in Kwara Central.
She also alleged that Saraki had boasted that if he was not important, the nominee would not come to him to seek his support for his confirmation.
However, shortly after the commencement of plenary on Tuesday, Saraki raised a Point of Order under Order 15 of the Senate Standing Rule, to draw the attention of his colleagues to Senator Usman’s comment.
He denied that such an event occured and claimed the comment may ruin his life, personality and reputation.
Saraki also called on Senator Usman to withdraw the said comment, which he considered derogatory, otherwise the matter be referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges.
“She categorically stated that I recorded a meeting that transpired between myself and her.
“Mr President and distinguished colleagues, I am surprised and shocked that a member of the chamber will rise and basically make a comment that was not correct.
“I want to categorically state here, Mr President, and distinguished colleagues that there was never, never a recording of the meeting I had with the senator.
“My position is that I will like to request the leadership that she withdraws the comment or the matter be referred to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges for it to be investigated”, he said.
However, Senate President David Mark said, “I will like to request that we don’t take this matter any further. I will like to meet with both Senators Bukola Saraki and Nenadi Usman.”
