5 children crushed to death in Kwara
Five children were crushed to death Tuesday at the border of Elekoyangan and Anfeyin communities located along the Ilorin/Jebba road when a Toyota Camry car collided with a stationery bus.
Seven children were reportedly involved in the incident, which occurred around 9:30 pm.Daily Trust gathered that the incident sparked protests from members of the community.
Daily Trust gathered that the five children died on the spot while the other two children were taken to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) where they are currently receiving treatment.
The unidentified driver of the Camry car was said to have left a hotel near Kwara State Polytechnic, when he lost control and hit the children, who were walking by the road-side.
The protest by members of the community caused a traffic gridlock in the area and para-lyzed academic activities at the polytechnic.
A member of the community, Mallam Isiaka Rahman, who described the incident as sad gave the names of the deceased as Abdulfatai, Sodiq, Fatai Kososi, Jamiu Mogaji, and Jamiu while Shola and Gafar who are in the hospital were said to be in coma.
"As we embarked on a peaceful protest mourning our loved ones, men of the police suddenly came shooting sporadically at our various houses. We had to run for our lives. This however caused the youths to go on rampage and set burn fires on the road", he said.
Some students of the polytechnic also stayed away from campus for fear of being caught in the protest. Sources at the polytechnic said though there is calm on campus, many students stayed at home due to transportation challenges, adding that a child of one of the commercial cab drivers plying the road was among the victims.
The state Commissioner of Police Agboola Oshodi-Glover who confirmed the incident appealed for calm among the residents, saying his men and officers would remain at the scene until normalcy returns.
