WAUG: Nasarawa athletes on rampage

Date: 2012-04-05

Nasarawa State University's players yesterday turned the mainbowl of the Kwara Sports Complex in Ilorin into a battle field when players on the reserve bench trooped into the field to protest a penalty awarded by Nike Adegbete to their opponent and host university, Unilorin.

The players' action which held up the match for several minutes until the referee called it off saw officials of the Nasarawa State University struggle to hold back the visibly agree players who insisted that the hosts were being favoured to their disadvantage.

Dr. Omirikpa Oyigbeden, the leader of delegation for the Nasarawa State University contingent to the Games, said he had observed from the beginning that the officiating would be biased given the fact that they were facing the host team. I was not surprised that we were given too red cards and an unjust penalty awarded against my team. It's unfortunate that this win at all cost syndrome has continued to rear its ugly head in all sporting activities. This is a big shame to the University of Ilorin.

Sport is about fair play and we've not got that here. We're leaving Ilorin as champions because Unilorin does not deserve to win." He noted that his school as defending champion of WAUG football was seen as the team to sacrifice to pave way for the host university.
