Ex-PDP Chairmanship Aspirant Shot Dead in Kwara.
Already, the affected police officer has been arrested for interrogation by the state police command.
THISDAY investigations revealed that the incident happened around 11:15pm on Friday night at Oro Town when Valentine fun seekers, including late Awoyale, converged on Topmost Hotel in Oro Town in Irepodun council of the state, for the celebration.
An eye-witness told journalists in Ilorin yesterday that the management of the hotel had invited policemen to provide security for the Valentine fun seekers.
Sources also said the un-named officer, who appeared drunk, suddenly woke up when he heard the noise of trouble makers and shot twice into the air.
The sources added that after the tension was doused, the drunken policeman however rose up again and released another gunshot, which passed through the wall of the hotel and allegedly hit late Awoyale in the chest, where he was said to be celebrating the Valentine period.
It was further learnt that the late Awoyale instantly slumped and all the efforts made by some good Samaritans at the hotel to revive him proved abortive, and he later died.
THISDAY investigations however revealed that the lifeless body of the deceased has been deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) mortuary.
The death of the former PDP Chairmanship aspirant also triggered wild protest by the youth of Oro Town.
A visit by THISDAY to Oro town yesterday showed that some anti-riot policemen and soldiers had taken over the town so as to restore peace in the town; following a wild protest that greeted the death of late Awoyale.
When contacted over the incident, the state police command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the incident. He said the officer affected has been arrested and currently undergoing orderly interrogation at the state police command headquarters, Ilorin.
