Offa: My life in danger, says PDP candidate

Date: 2013-09-12

The Councillorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Shawo South West ward in Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State, Mr. Afolabi Olawole, has said that some persons  are seeking to kill him for rejecting the victory awarded him by the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission in the rerun election of August 31.

Olawole, who spoke with  journalists from his hideout on Wednesday, said that he had been receiving telephone calls threatening his life and members of his family since "I refused to be part of the fraud."

Olawole  said that he was not bought nor received any promise from anybody before he came out to reject the victory. He added that he knew he did not win and there was no way he would be at peace with himself occupying the office whose election he knew he did not win.

He debunked the claim by his party, the PDP, that he was not its candidate. He explained that he was the PDP candidate at the first ballot and during the rerun poll as well.

Olawole said that there was never a time he left the PDP. He added that the KWASIEC, which conducted the rerun election, listed him as the PDP candidate for Shawo SouthWest Ward.

He said, "I will say what I have said before: The APC candidate won in all the eight units in Shawo. The results were collated and announced after the election but things changed after.

"My name is on the list as the PDP candidate. I am not a member of the APC and I was not given money or anything to reject the victory. I did not win and God knows. I am a Muslim and I won’t  claim what is not mine. I was not bought over by anybody.

"They are threatening my life: they are sending messages to me through my people and I have been receiving telephone calls."

Asked if he was ready to join the APC now that the PDP no longer wanted him, Olawole said that the people of Offa would determine his political future.

He said he was not aware that the PDP planned to rig the election, adding even if such plan was in place it was not known to him.

He advised the PDP to reflect on why the people of the local government rejected the party and made corrections rather than laying claim to a victory that was not theirs.

The candidate also urged the APC to see the love shown them by the people who voted them as a trust which must never be betrayed.
