WAUG 2012 gulps N.5b

THE 13th edition of the West Africa University Games (WAUG), scheduled for the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Kwara state, Nigeria, between 27th March and 7th April, 2012, is expected to gulp over five hundred million naira.

Making this known was the Director General of the Games, Professor Lasun Emiola, who also doubles as the President, West Africa University Games (WAUG), when he led other officials of the university on a courtesy visit to the management of the Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday.

Emiola said, "This year's games would cost five hundred million, the federal government has been very supportive when it comes to finance. Part of the money is being use to upgrade the existing sporting facilities at UNILORIN to ensure we have a smooth games as well as an enabling enviroment for those that will be coming to participate".

He however hinted that 3,000 athletes from across universities in West Africa would be coming to participate in the games. The former President of the Nigeria Union Games (NUGA) further revealed that 1,500 officials are also expected.

Athletes are expected from west african countries like: Ghana, Senegal, Mali, Liberia and host, Nigeria as well as other countries from the West African coast while about Fourteen events according to Emiola are to be competed for during the games and, they  are; Athletics, Football, Volleyball, Handball, Judo and other olympics games.   

While reacting to his visit of the team on behalf of the Nigerian Tribune management, Associate Editor, Sports, Mr Funmi Erinle, appreciated them for choosing Tribune as one of the media organisations to visit and urged them to do everything possible to ensure that marcenaries are not given any room to operate while the game lasted.
