Ahmed Charges Parents to Devote More Time for Children
Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, Sunday called on parents and guardians to devote more time to the training and well being of their children and wards in order to complement governments' policies and initiatives to nurture them into good citizens.
Just as telecommunications giant, Globacom stated that it identified with the drive, passion and aspirations of Nigerian children in contributing to national development, the Senior Pastor of the Four Square Gospel Church, Asokoro, Rev. Babajide Olowodola, warned that the country could be heading towards disaster, if parents fail in their bid to instil the right morals in their children.
They all spoke at separate fora ahead of today's celebration of this year's Children's Day.
However, Ahmed in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Alhaji Abdulwahab Oba, on the occasion of this year's Children Day celebration, noted that given the prevailing national moral decadence and security challenges, it was expedient that stakeholders, whether as parents, educators, trainers or government should rally round to restore the age long, result yielding cultural values that ensured that inculcation of moral values in children was both at the family and communal levels.
The governor reiterated his administration's commitment to child friendly policies and programmes that guaranteed the conducive environment for physical and intellectual development.
On its part, Globacom's Executive Director, Special Projects, Mr. Mike Jituboh, Globacom said the company was convinced that the future of Nigeria was bright because of the brilliance exhibited regularly by children in different fields of human endeavour.
The statement stated that: "In the last couple of months, many Nigerian children have excelled and brought honour to their fatherland. There was the story of two Nigerian children, Samantha and Kelechi Okere, who won the Oklahoma City University Regional Science and Engineering Fairs awards for their invention of bio-fuel as natural alternative to fossil fuel. There was also the story of a 10-year-old pupil, Seyi-Ojo Anjolaoluwa, who emerged the youngest Nigerian Microsoft certified professional and one of the youngest people in the world to attain such feat. Nigerian children are exceptional. They are unlimited."
Meanwhile, Olowodola, while fielding questions from journalists, said:
"The church has a role to play in restoring the moral rectitude of the society. It has to help the children to grow in the nurture and admonition of the Lord."
When we do this, there must be a remnant that will hold this nation together as one wonderful indivisible nation. The church itself must now stand up and fill in the gap because there are too many gaps we see now that is reflecting in all that we see today. Except we take time to check these, Nigeria may be heading for the brink of the precipice."
On moral decadence which has eaten deep into the society, Olowodola noted that the church has a role to play in restoring the moral rectitude of our society by helping to bring up children in the fear and admonition of the Lord.
"We can be sure this will help to keep this country together. Violence, intolerance and corruption follow after what we call the trickle down phenomenon. It trickles from the head down to the base of the pyramid and the children are watching. Parents must take no chances, our teachers must be well trained and ready to impart the best in our children," he said.
