Rainstorm Destroys N80 Million Property in Kwara

Date: 2013-04-18

At least property worth over N80 million have been lost to rainstorm in Kwara State since the beginning of 2013 rainy season in February, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Emergency and Relief Services, Alhaji Musa Abdullahi, said on Tuesday.

The first rain of the year experienced early February in Ilorin, the state capital, caused havoc to residents, destroying valuables worth millions of naira, he said.

He added that Omu-Aran, the headquarters of Irepodun Local Government Area of the state was the worst hit as last month's rainstorm in the area destroyed property valued at N50 million.

The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) had predicted heavy rainfall in some states, including Kwara.

Speaking with Daily Trust, the governor's aide said already, the state government has expended over N39million on provision of relief materials to rainstorm victims.

He added that a little preventive measure from members of the public would reduce the cost of funding disaster victims, advising them to always keep their houses in good shape to ward off rainstorm disaster.

Also speaking, former chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Ilorin branch, Engr. Kamil Olalekan, urged the government to enforce standard professional practice in building and construction.
