Sanctions on Kwara United/Sunshine subject to ratification - Adepoju
Following the sanctions meted out to both Kwara United FC and Sunshine Stars of Akure by the Nigerian Premier League, NPL, over the fracas that greeted their Week 12 encounter in Ilorin last weekend, Chairman of the Disciplinary and Organizing committee of the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, Barrister Olaleye Adepoju has disclosed that the NPL has the right to give temporary sanctions to erring clubs but that they are subject to ratification by the disciplinary committee.
Barrister Adepoju told Inside Out Premier League that the committee will seat in two weeks to ratify the decisions of the NPL which will be in line with the 2011/2012 NPL statutes.
"All the leagues in the country have only one disciplinary committee which happens to be the O/D of the NFF. So whatever sanction they imposed on the erring clubs is a temporary one pending the ratification of the O/d.
"We will be meeting within the next two weeks and the case will be addressed. The rules governing the 2011/2012 season have been amended at the NPL's AGM last year, so the case will be addressed in tandem with the present rules and not that of the 2010/2011 season except if the relevant section that addresses the case was adopted in the present one," Adepoju said.
Sunshine TM rejects NPL's decision
Team Manager of Sun shine Stars of Akrue, Gabriel Aburowa who was fined by the NPL for his alleged conduct in the game between Kwara United and Sunshine Stars last weekend Ilorin Township Stadium has disclosed that the action of the league body is barbaric.
In a chat with Inside Out Premier League, the Ondo State-born football administrator expressed sadness over the decision, stressing that his employers (Sunshine Stars) do not accept the decision of the league body.
"How can they (NPL) do that? It is barbaric. I don't know where they got their information on what transpired at the stadium from. We (Sunshine Star) as a club are making sure the case is looked into properly because we don't accept the decision," he said.
Explaining the incident, he said, "I was hit and I fell to the ground, the video clip that we have and submitted explains it further. The NPL should tell us if someone is hit by erring fans, where does he or she run to? This is why we do not understand why they deducted three points from Kwara United and yet nobody was awarded the tie," Aburowa said.
