ANA President Dr Usman Akanbi Explores Greed and Family Disputes in New Play Heritage of Loss
The President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Dr Usman Akanbi, has released a new dramatic work titled Heritage of Loss, exploring the consequences of greed, family conflict, and the breakdown of moral values in disputes over inheritance.
The themes of the play formed the centerpiece of a virtual book chat held last Saturday, bringing together literary scholars, critics, and enthusiasts to examine family dynamics, the concept of legacy, and the social implications of material pursuit.
Organized to mark the release of the play, the event featured dramatic readings, reviews, and interactive discussions. Excerpts were presented by Dr Olatunbosun Taofeek, Esther Adelana, Olaoluwa Ayorinde, and Deborah Omoregba, setting the stage for subsequent analytical sessions.
Moderating the event, Professor Obari Gamba commended Akanbi for contributing another dramatic work to the Nigerian literary space, noting that publishing a play represents a significant achievement for both the author and the reading public.
Reviewing the book, literary critic David Mobe described Heritage of Loss as a compelling examination of human character, conscience, and moral responsibility. He noted that the play contrasts financial interests with personal integrity while incorporating Yoruba proverbs, traditional expressions, and cultural values to enrich its dramatic appeal.
Contributing to the dialogue, Professor Isiaka Aliagan highlighted the universal relevance of the play, observing that disputes over property distribution remain a recurring issue in contemporary society. He stated that the work challenges readers to prioritize character and moral heritage over physical assets.
Similarly, Yemi Kasali emphasized that receiving an inheritance requires matching capacity and character to preserve it, calling for proper legal arrangements, including written wills and estate planning, to prevent avoidable family crises.
Responding to the reviews, Akanbi stated that he chose the medium of drama to confront social realities and spark reflection on societal challenges. He explained that the play seeks to redefine heritage beyond landed property and material wealth to encompass character, influence, and integrity.
The author warned against allowing inheritance disputes to destroy family unity, emotional bonds, and community cohesion, urging families to adopt dialogue and document their wishes early.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Lagos Chapter of ANA, Dr Olatunbosun Taofeek, commended the playwright for addressing the responsibilities associated with wealth transfer across generations, adding that discussions on the book's core messages will continue across wider literary platforms.
