Reps Urges I-G to Arrest Asadu's Killers

Date: 2013-03-06

The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, to arrest and prosecute the killers of late Chinwike Asadu.

Asadu, who was until his death the Commissioner of Police in Kwara, was killed by unknown gunmen on Feb.3, in Enugu.

It urged President Goodluck Jonathan to redouble his effort as the chief security officer of the country to ensure that all his security chiefs were on top of their schedules.

The house further mandated the relevant committees of the house to follow up on the case to ensure that the police effectively execute their job.

It said that the installation of CCTV cameras should be encouraged in all state capitals and public places.

The resolution of the house followed a motion on the 'need to unravel high profile killings in Nigeria' moved by Rep. Zakari Mohammed (PDP-Kwara), which was unanimously adopted without debate.

Mohammed said the killing of Asadu brought to question the capacity of the country's security to deal with crimes.

He said that since the killing of late Dele Giwa in 1986 through a letter bomb up till today, no high profile killing had been unravelled.

The legislator noted that if a high ranking police officer like Asadu could be killed in this manner, this would further worsen the security situation in the country.

Meanwhile, the house has rejected a motion by Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila (ACN), on the need to publish the level of implementation of the annual budgets in the national dailies. (NAN)
