The 2026 Kwara Open Golf Championship will light up the Ilorin Golf Club this weekend, as about 100 golfers from more than 15 clubs across Nigeria converge on the Kwara State capital.

The two-day tournament runs from Saturday, October 10 to 11 and is one of the most important amateur titles on the state golf calendar. It has also grown into a sports tourism attraction, drawing players and guests to Ilorin from different parts of the country.

The competition will feature men, lady golfers and veterans, giving players in each category a chance to compete for honours. Over the years, it has also served as a stage for Kwara's leading golfers to test their skills against players from established clubs nationwide.

The Captain of Ilorin Golf Club, Luqman Owolewa, said the tournament plays a key role in promoting the game and strengthening ties within the golfing community.

"This event promotes the game in the state and is a platform that connects golfers across the country, especially players from neighbouring states," Owolewa said.

He added that the club's hospitality and ambience remain a major attraction for participants and have contributed to the strong turnout recorded over the years.

The influx of golfers and guests is also expected to showcase Ilorin and boost economic activity around the state capital.

The programme has the support of the Kwara State Government and several corporate organisations, whose backing continues to aid golf development in the state.
