Scores arrested over Kwara CP's killing - Police

Date: 2013-03-05

The police have confirmed that scores of people have been arrested in the ongoing investigations on the murder of Kwara State police commissioner, Mr. Chinweike Asadu.

Briefing journalists, Tuesday, in Enugu on the effort of security agents towards tracking down Asadu's killers, the commissioner of police in the state, Mr. Tonye Ebitibituwa said the police would not rest in their effort until the culprits were apprehended.

Residents of Nike have earlier raised the alarm over an alleged mass arrest of their youth ever since the incident happened on Saturday night.

They have claimed that no less than 500 youths are currently been detained in several police divisions in the Enugu metropolis, including the State force headquarters.

However, Ebitibituwa, who acknowledged that arrests have been made refused to disclose the actual figure and the identity of those arrested.

He said: "I want to formally inform members of the press on the death of my colleague, classmate and good friend who was on transit to Port-Hacourt.
"He met his untimely death very close to his house; we have been battling to make sure that we bring to book those involved in this dastardly act.

"This is a case that all of us did not expect when it happened; the suddenness of this case has given us course to re-strategize and see that crime of such nature does not occur again.

"We have made arrests, and we are still investigating; we will not reveal the identity of the persons we have arrested; we will also not reveal the number.

"As I said earlier, we are still interrogating them; they were random arrests in criminal hideouts, through the process of this investigation we can get a clue from them and we take it up from there".

The commissioner said it was too early to make conclusions on the reasons behind the killing, stressing "I told you that we are still investigating this case, it will be too early to term it robbery, assassination or kidnap".

The CP also confirmed that one Corporal Amos Marcus was killed along Rangers Avenue in Enugu by gunmen last two weeks.

The late policeman was an orderly attached to a personality, whose identity has been concealed by the police.

He called on the general public to assist the police towards the success of the investigation.

It could be recalled that the late commissioner of police, Chinweike Asadu, who hailed from Nsukka in Enugu State was killed at Amorji-Nike, Enugu state on Saturday night.
