Date: 2026-05-04

Kwara United and Niger Tornadoes played out an enthralling 2-2 draw in a North Central derby on Matchday 36 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) at the Bako-Kontagora Stadium on Sunday.

The Harmony Boys commenced the fixture with strong resolve to extend their unbeaten run. The hosts took the lead in the 26th minute when AbdulRasheed Shehu converted from the penalty spot. However, Kwara United responded swiftly, with Babatunde Bright levelling the scores in the 29th minute.

Despite facing hostility from home supporters following the equaliser, Kwara United maintained composure and continued to press forward. The first half concluded 1-1, although the visitors were reduced to 10 men after Toyeeb Gidado received a second yellow card and subsequently a red card in the 35th minute.

Kwara United displayed resilience in the second half, dominating play despite being a man down. Their efforts yielded reward in the 65th minute when Akanni Akeem scored to give them a surprising lead. The goal sparked unrest among the home supporters, with Kabiru Muhammed reportedly struck on the head by a thrown object.

Niger Tornadoes fought back and secured an equaliser in the 86th minute through Ismail Sarki, ensuring both sides shared the points. The hosts also had a player dismissed late in the contest.

Addressing journalists after the match, Coach Ashifat Suleiman described the encounter as tough. He noted that while the team aimed for maximum points, the draw remains a positive result heading into the final two games of the season.

Kwara United now occupy 16th position on the table with 44 points from 36 matches and will face Enyimba in their next fixture.
