Reps Member Sponsors Bill for Additional Local Councils in Kwara State
Hon. Raheem Tunji Ajuloopin, member representing Ekiti/Irepodun/Isin/Oke-Ero Federal Constituency, has introduced a bill to establish additional local government areas in Kwara State, arguing that the measure will bring governance closer to the grassroots and bolster national security.
The lawmaker, in a statement issued through his Special Assistant on New Media, Jamiu Balogun, explained that creating more manageable local councils would improve administrative efficiency, speed up development delivery, and enable faster response to security challenges in rural communities.
Ajuloopin stated that the proposal forms part of two key bills he recently sponsored in the House of Representatives, the second being an amendment to the Private Guards Companies Act.
The amendment seeks to empower licensed private security firms to take on greater responsibility for routine security duties, thereby allowing the Nigeria Police and other agencies to concentrate on intelligence gathering, criminal investigation, and prosecution.
He stressed that overstretched local government structures currently hinder swift intervention in both governance and security matters, adding that smaller, more localised councils would deliver services more effectively and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria's overall security architecture.
"Together, we will continue to pursue policies that promote development, security and good governance," he said.
Kwara State has previously attempted to expand its local government structure.
In 2014, the state government inaugurated a 14-member committee to examine the feasibility of creating Local Council Development Areas, citing the state's growing population, large land mass and administrative demands.
Before then, LCDAs reportedly created at the twilight of former Governor Mohammed Lawal's administration in 2002 were scrapped by the succeeding administration of Dr. Bukola Saraki in 2003 due to what was described as funding constraints at the time.
With Kwara still operating the 16-LGA structure established under the 1976 local government reforms, Olawuyi's bill, if passed, would reshape the governance landscape, creating more units of administration, expanding representation, and potentially improving security response at the grassroots.
