Kwara Teachers Hail AI Flashcards and Storybooks for Young Learners
Teachers across Kwara State have lauded the Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative (BBYDI) for introducing AI Flashcards and Storybooks aimed at helping young learners understand the fast-growing world of artificial intelligence (AI).
Arewa PUNCH reports that the teaching materials were unveiled at the end of a two-day AI Literacy Workshop held on Wednesday in Ilorin, which attracted participants from both public and private schools. Laying the Foundation for the Future
BBYDI's Communications Director, Sanni Alausa-Issa, said the new learning tools were designed to ensure no child grows up digitally excluded.
"If the future of work is AI-driven, the foundations must be laid in primary and secondary schools. These flashcards and storybooks allow teachers to introduce AI in a way children can understand, enjoy, and apply safely," he said.
The new resources, developed under BBYDI's AI Literacy for Everyday People programme with support from the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, were described by teachers as "long overdue tools" capable of modernising classrooms and improving learners' digital readiness.
The flashcards and storybooks simplify complex AI concepts using age-appropriate stories, relatable examples, and colourful illustrations.
During the workshop, facilitators guided teachers through practical sessions in which they worked in groups to create stories, lesson notes, and classroom activities using the new materials.
Participants also learned how storytelling can help break down complex technology concepts for pupils in basic schools, enabling them to better understand AI applications they already encounter, such as translation tools, smart devices, and digital assistants.
A major highlight was a hands-on session where teachers used AI platforms, including Gemini and NotebookLM, to generate children's stories within minutes.
One group produced an illustrated story on "contentment" for pupils aged six to eight, while others used AI to develop lesson summaries, short animations, and reading passages tailored to various age groups.
Many of the teachers Arewa PUNCH spoke to said the workshop exposed them to how AI could simplify lesson planning and improve classroom delivery.
One teacher, Ms Barakat Alli, said the training represented "a major shift in how we think about teaching," adding that it revealed "endless possibilities" for integrating AI tools into classroom instruction.
Another teacher, Mr Raji Abdullahi, pointed out that the resources would enhance pupils' comprehension and spark interest in emerging digital career paths.
Participants were also trained on using AI to create animations, generate lesson notes, design slides, prepare assessments, and conduct research.
Several of them noted that the tools would significantly reduce workload, allowing for more personalised teaching.
Officials from the Kwara State Ministry of Education, which supported the workshop, commended BBYDI for empowering teachers with skills aligned with global trends in digital learning.
They stressed that integrating AI into school systems had become essential as nations transition toward technology-driven economies.
