EFCC and NBA Ilorin Pledge Stronger Collaboration in National Anti-Corruption Drive
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ilorin branch, have agreed to deepen their collaboration in the fight against corruption.
The commitment was reached on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by Barrister Sulyman Kosemani, Chairman of the NBA Ilorin Branch, to Daniel Isei, EFCC Zonal Director for Ilorin.
Kosemani commended the existing cooperation between the EFCC and legal practitioners in Kwara State but urged for more structured and sustained engagement.
He called on the agency to intensify scrutiny of politically exposed persons particularly public officials emphasising the need for accountability in managing increased government allocations following the removal of fuel subsidies.
Kosemani also advocated for greater inclusion of lawyers in EFCC investigations and operations, stating that such involvement would enhance procedural efficiency, uphold due process, and strengthen trust between the anti-graft agency and the legal profession.
The meeting marks a step toward formalising partnerships between law enforcement and legal experts in advancing transparency and justice in public service.
Responding, Isei described lawyers as "indispensable allies" in the anti-corruption drive, stressing the need for closer synergy. "Lawyers and law enforcement agents cannot do without each other. We can achieve more together," he said.
He, however, cautioned lawyers against interfering with EFCC investigations and urged them to provide credible intelligence, particularly in high-profile cases. He reminded the delegation of their role as "ministers in the temple of justice" and advised against filing applications that could delay trials.
"Our gates are open to lawyers and other stakeholders for collaboration," Isei added, reiterating the EFCC's commitment to professionalism and integrity.
