Kwara Govt, MTN Foundation, UNODC and NDLEA Kick Off Anti-Drug School Programme
The Kwara State Government, in partnership with the MTN Foundation, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has launched a training programme for principals and teachers in selected schools to combat drug abuse among students.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by his Special Adviser Alhaji Saadu Salahu, highlighted that drug abuse is now evident even at the primary school level, underscoring the urgent need for teacher involvement.
He described the initiative as a critical intervention to raise awareness about the dangers of substance use, reaffirming that teachers play a vital role as opinion leaders, child developers, and community influencers.
Deputy Commandant of NDLEA, Jamilu Usman, commended the state's proactive stance and called for sustained collaboration to build a drug-free society.
UNODC trainer Maria Ilugbuhi disclosed that 30 teachers will be trained on the 12-module Unplugged curriculum, which covers decision-making, social skills, relationship building, and interactive classroom activities designed to prevent youth substance use.
The programme aims to equip educators with practical tools to guide students toward healthier choices and foster safer learning environments across Kwara.
