Kwara Commissioners Jittery over Imminent Shake-Up

Date: 2013-02-11

Palpable fear has enveloped commissioners and other political appointees in Kwara State over proposed cabinet shake-up in the state, investigation by our correspondent revealed on Sunday.

The state Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, had hinted of a possible cabinet shake-up on Thursday, during the state government's monthly public enlightenment programme, tagged, 'The governor explains'.

He stated that the performance of the current commissioners or political office holders was being evaluated. He, however, did not specify when the shake-up would be effected.

He added that, if necessary, changes could be made to improve on service delivery in the state.

Ahmed had said on Thursday, “In any system where you will expect growth and development, there is bound to be change.

“So, where necessary, as we move on, we will continue to review performance and compare them against expectations. Where they require change, we change. It is a normal course.

“As we are going on, assessment is on a continuous basis. I want to assure you that we are very much concerned about how service will be delivered to our people.”

Our correspondent gathered that following the disclosure, some commissioners, senior advisers, senior special assistants and assistants, who feared that their performances might not match expectations, were said to have been jolted.

Many of the political appointees declined comments, when contacted by our correspondent.

But one of them, who pleaded anonymity, said it was not out of place for the political appointees to be concerned about their job and future.

The source added that the appointees' fears had been compounded by the high rate of unemployment and the increasing challenges faced by industries and entrepreneurs.

According to him, business environment in the country has yet to be very friendly, especially as regards the cost of doing business which he described as still very high.

He also stated that with the death of Second Republic Senate Leader, Dr. Olusola Saraki, who was widely called, 'The strong man of Kwara politics,' the fate of many of the appointees, especially his loyalists, had become uncertain.
