Kwara Launches Free Hepatitis Screening Across 16 LGAs to Tackle Silent Epidemic

Date: 2025-07-29

Kwara State Government has announced a free hepatitis screening programme across all 16 local government areas to combat viral hepatitis and mark World Hepatitis Day 2025.

Commissioner for Health Dr Amina El-Imam revealed the initiative during a press briefing in Ilorin on Monday, explaining that this year's global theme "Let's Break It Down" aims to dispel myths, increase awareness, and remove barriers to testing and treatment.

She stated: "Hepatitis B and C remain critical public health challenges in Kwara and Nigeria. These infections can lead to liver cirrhosis, cancer, and death if undetected. This campaign will demystify the disease and ensure early intervention for vulnerable populations."

The Commissioner emphasised that the free screenings align with Kwara's broader strategy to strengthen disease surveillance and primary healthcare access, particularly in rural communities.

Citing World Health Organisation (WHO) data, she stated that hepatitis-related liver diseases claimed about 1.1 million lives globally each year.

She emphasised that early diagnosis, vaccination, and timely treatment were essential in preventing hepatitis-related illnesses and deaths.

"Many people remain undiagnosed due to limited access to testing and low public awareness," she said.

She reaffirmed the government's commitment to eliminating hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030, in alignment with Nigeria's National Viral Hepatitis Strategic Plan and WHO's global targets. (NAN)
