KWASU Students Bring Yoruba History to Life in Gripping Okeho Exodus Premiere
The Kwara State University (KWASU) community experienced a vivid re-enactment of Yoruba history as Performing Arts students premiered The Okeho Exodus, a historical play penned by cultural advocate and playwright Olutayo Irantiola.
The production was staged at the university's Ultra-Modern Performing Arts Theatre, attracting academics, culture enthusiasts, and theatre aficionados, who were deeply moved by the students' portrayal of a pivotal episode in Oke-Ogun history, marked by resistance, regicide, and communal migration.
At its heart, The Okeho Exodus explores the political and cultural upheaval faced by the Oke-Ogun people during colonial-era Nigeria, delving into themes of leadership, gender roles, collective struggle, and the courage to confront oppression, which resonate with Nigeria's contemporary socio-political challenges.
Following the performance, Professor Abdulrasheed A. Adeoye, the project supervisor, addressed the audience, drawing parallels between the historical narrative and Nigeria's present-day issues.
"The Okeho Exodus is a story of resilience and determination. It reminds us that while Nigeria faces its own set of trials, there is hope. But for us to overcome, we must commit to patriotism and nonviolent progress.
The production was lauded for its artistic depth, stagecraft, and faithful interpretation of cultural heritage. The cast's disciplined performances, coupled with meticulous costume and set designs, transported the audience to the heart of 19th-century Yoruba society.
Playwright Olutayo Irantiola, who was in attendance, praised the students for what he described as an "electrifying" interpretation of his work.
According to him, "watching these students interpret the Okeho story with such depth and emotion has been profoundly humbling. They blew my mind away with their fantastic performance. They honoured history and reimagined it for a new generation."
The premiere attracted prominent figures in academia, including Prof. Emeritus Musibau Akanji, former Vice-Chancellor of both the Federal University of Technology, Minna and Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin; Dr. Michael Agboola, Head of Department, Performing Arts and Film Studies, KWASU; Dr. Joe Odedina; and Mrs. Temitope Adedokun. Others in attendance were Dr. Musiliyu Sanni, Mr. Basiru Adebisi, Mr. Tosin Ibitoye, Mr. Gbenga Adumati, and Mr. Ganiyu Kolawole.
The successful staging of The Okeho Exodus marks a significant milestone for the university's Performing Arts Department and for Irantiola's growing repertoire of historically grounded storytelling. The play's next stop is expected to be at Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, where students of the Theatre Arts Department are scheduled to perform it on July 17, 2025.
As the momentum behind The Okeho Exodus builds, the play continues to inspire dialogue on the role of theatre in preserving culture and shaping national identity.
