Kwara Monarch Disputes Oreke-Okegbo Incident Claim, Blames Police for Geographical Error
The traditional ruler of Oreke-Okegbo community in Ifelodun Local Government Area (LGA), Kwara State, Oba Sunday Adefila, has disputed the police's account of a mining incident that resulted in the deaths of two mobile policemen and the abduction of two others—including a Chinese and a Nigerian miner—on Wednesday.
Speaking to DAILY POST via telephone interview on Saturday, the monarch clarified that the attack did not occur in Oreke-Okegbo, as reported, but in the neighbouring Oreke-Oke community. Oba Adefila, a former General Manager of the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA), stated: "There are two Oreke communities in the area. Oreke-Okegbo has no mining activities, so the incident must have taken place in Oreke-Oke."
Police sources revealed that the attackers, who seized the officers' firearms, are demanding a ransom of N1 billion for the captives' release. The abduction follows escalating violence in mining zones, with authorities urged to prioritise security in high-risk areas.
DAILY POST quoted the traditional ruler as querying, "What is going on in this country? The incident was not in Oreke-Okegbo, no mining site is situated in my community and as the Kabiyesi of Oreke-Okegbo community, I debunk the story inasmuch as we have two Orekes, and mine is Oreke-Okegbo."
He called on the police command to retract its report on the incident in order to disabuse the mind of the public as it did not happen in his domain.
The Oba said he has been bombarded with calls from within and outside the country following the report, which has gone viral.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the state police command SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi on Sunday were unsuccessful.
