Calm Returns to Kwara Communities

Date: 2013-02-03

Calm has returned to Offa and Erin-ile communities in Offa and Oyun Local Government Areas of Kwara State respectively.

Members of the two neighbouring communities had engaged in orgy of violence resulting in the killing of three people and destruction of properties last week.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Fabode Olufemi, in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Saturday, said peace was restored by a combined team of soldiers and policemen deployed in the area.

Meanwhile, the Kwara South Youth Development Initiative has called for peace between the warring parties.

The Coordinator of the group, Mr. Ben Duntoye, said KSYDI had constituted a seven-man committee to mediate between the warring communities to ensure that they sheath their swords.

He added that development could only strive in an atmosphere of peace and harmony.

Duntoye urged the youth of the state particularly from Erin-ile and Offa communities to embrace peace and dissociate themselves from violence and wanton destruction of lives and properties.

He also called on the monarchs and leaders from the communities to prevail on their people for amicable resolution of the conflict.

"Kwara State is known for peace and harmony. This legacy should be sustained at all times," he said.

Duntoye commended the state government and security agencies for preventing further loss of lives and properties.

He called on the people of the state to continue to support and cooperate with government to enable it to concentrate on its programmes.
