Senate Calls for Urgent Safety Measures on River Niger After Kwara Boat Tragedy
The Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to conduct an urgent survey of the River Niger, which borders Kwara North Senatorial District in Kwara State and parts of Niger State, with the aim of implementing effective safety measures to prevent future boat mishaps in the area.
The Senate's resolution followed the tragic boat accident in Gwajigbo-Mudi community, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, where many lives were lost. Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar, representing Kwara North Senatorial District, formally notified the National Assembly about the heartbreaking incident, prompting the Senate's response.
The Senate also urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide swift aid and relief to the affected communities to alleviate the suffering caused by the tragedy.
In his statement, Senator Umar extended his heartfelt condolences to the Kwara State government, led by Governor AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq, the Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Mu'azu Shehu Omar, and the entire community affected by the tragic event.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time”, the Lawmaker added.
