Irregularities, Late Arrival of Election Materials Spark Boycott in Kwara South LG Polls
As reported by AIT News, most eligible voters in the southern senatorial district of Kwara State boycotted Saturday's local government elections, citing allegations of irregularities that plagued the exercise.
Some respondents expressed frustration with the late arrival of electoral materials, the absence of result sheets, and other logistical issues. At Iyeru Ward, Polling Unit 1a, 1b, 1c, and 008 in Offa, electoral materials and officials arrived at approximately 10:45 a.m., more than two hours past the official start time of 8 a.m. This delay agitated voters, who also noted the incomplete ballot papers and result sheets provided by election officials.
The story was however different in Ilorin the State capital as the election there went on peacefully.
How the state Independent Electoral Commission intends to address the huge numbers of electorate disenfranchised in some voting centres due to non-availability of necessary voting materials in Offa local government and most parts of Kwara South is left to be seen.
