Date: 2023-08-27

Prof. Wahab Egbewole, the Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin (Unilorin), says the institution has invested heavily on healthcare to ensure the campus is populated by physically and emotionally healthy students.

Egbewole stated this on Sunday in Ilorin at a three-day workshop on mental health promotion, organised by the Women Friendly Initiative.

The vice chancellor, who was represented by Prof. Olubunmi Omotesho, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), acknowledged the essential role students play in the existence of the university.

He further justified why they should always be in good condition of health, adding that the wellbeing or otherwise of students, directly impact not only on their academic performance, but also the overall atmosphere of the university and its surrounding communities.

Egbewole added that the commitment of the institution to the mental health of its students underscored its resolve to fostering a supportive and nurturing environment for them.

Also speaking, Dr Rasheed Odunola, their Director of Health Services of the university, lauded the efforts of the organizers of the program in providing financial and social support to the students.

Odunola, who is also a member of the Governing Council of the institution, urged participants to take full advantage of the knowledge shared during the workshop.

Similarly, he encouraged students to become ambassadors of the mental health promotion initiative by assisting in spreading awareness and fostering a culture of total wellbeing on campus.

The don commended the collaborative efforts between the university and the Women Friendly Initiative, as he recognized the potential impact such collaboration would have on the wellbeing of students.

Earlier, Mrs Oluwatoyin Owolabi, the Program Manager of the initiative, explained that the aim of the program was to provide students with high quality and friendly information and services related to mental health and psychosocial support.

She noted that focusing on the mental health of the Nigerian youth must be a priority for all stakeholders in the country, while describing young people as leaders of every nation.
