Opinion: On the Claim of 400 Renovated Classrooms - The Kwara State Governor Lied

Date: 2012-12-24

The attention of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Kwara State Chapter, has been brought to the bogus claim allegedly made by the Governor of Kwara State, Alhaji Abdulfatai Ahmed that the state under him had rehabilitated over 400 classrooms at the basic and senior secondary school levels in this year alone in the state. The Governor was reported to have stated this on Monday at the commissioning of a newly established private school in Ilorin.

As much as our party does not begrudge the Governor for dwelling under such a spurious illusion, we however owe it to the members of the public, who are discernable enough to see through the government never ending wanton claims, to put the records straight and state the true position of things.

Verifiable facts across the state indicated that since the inception of the Fatai Ahmed-led government in the state, the few successfully rehabilitated classrooms by his government are those abandoned by his predecessor and godfather. And to add salt to injury, even the few ones verified to have been successfully completed were awarded to political jobbers who did very shoddy rehabilitation works on the classrooms at the expense of innocent pupils who helplessly bear the brunt of their selfishness and ineptitude.

A state-wide assessment of the Kwara public schools by private assessors commissioned by our party in furtherance of our party's public intervention ideology came in with damning reports of the sorry state of public schools infrastructure in the state. We therefore could not reconcile facts at our disposal with the obviously unsubstantiated assertion of the Governor, who we reasonably expect would be armed with verifiable facts about happenings across the length and breadth of the state and not just the state capital or his home town.

It may therefore not be surprising that the Governor himself does not have a proper conviction of thought as he might have blindly relied on feedbacks from the "political contractors" since he does not himself carry out any on-the-spot assessment of the projects he personally signs and approves.

The CPC thereby out rightly debunk the assertion of the Governor as nothing but barefaced lies. It is even more worrisome to us that the Governor believed his own lies. The said assertion has clearly given the governor out as an expensively dressed jester who in his delusional state would say anything as long as his undiscerning audience is awed of his gratuitous remarks.

The public therefore deserves to know not only the true state of the government intervention in the wobbling educational sector but also a public apology from the governor for obviously peddling untruth on a sector as germane as education.
