Vandals destroy transformer in Ilorin

Thieves on Wednesday vandalised an electric transformer and cables near the late Justice Mustapha Akanbi Library in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

The transformer is owned by Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

The vandals fled, abandoning the vandalised items, upon sighting policemen, it was said.

Police spokesman Ajayi Okasanmi confirmed the incident.

He said, "Intelligence available to the command revealed that some vandals were operating on an IBEDC transformer close to Mustapha Akanbi's library, Commissioner of police Mohammed Lawal Bagega immediately dispatched a team of operatives to the scene, on sighting the police, the vandals abandoned the vandalised transformer and took to their heels.

"Items were recovered and subsequently handed over to the Business Manager, IBEDC, Challenge area, Ilorin."

Mr. Okasanmi added that "effort is ongoing to arrest the vandals.

"For the umpteenth time the CP is warning criminals moving around Ilorin metro and it's environs vandalising public utilities that the command is all out to put a stop to the act, anybody arrested will be severely dealt with in accordance with the law."
