Kwara warns varsities, polys, others against illegal fees

Date: 2020-11-06

The Kwara State Government has warned heads of state-owned tertiary institutions to desist from self-imposed levy, under the guise of Internally Generated Revenue that would amount to the exploitation of their students.

The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Hajia Sa'adatu Modibbo-Kawu, gave the warning in a statement signed by the ministry's Press Secretary, Adamu Saidu.

Modibbo-Kawu said that warning became necessary after she received a report alleging that the College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies had imposed exemption fees on new students who do not reside in the hostel.

The commissioner decried the development and warned heads of tertiary institutions in the state to desist from such imposition of fees not approved by the state government.

"This administration is compassionate about people's plight in this trying period and would not add to their difficulty," she said.

The commissioner had assured students at a recent stakeholders' meeting that there would be no increment in fees under any guise.
