Police blow hot over planned cultism anniversary celebration in Kwara

The Kwara State Police Command has warned against the planned festival of cultism in Ilorin, the state capital.

The police said they have received credible intelligence report that some cult members were planning to celebrate anniversary of their movement in the state on Monday.

Findings revealed that previous celebrations in notable area of the state capital were trailed by violence and criminal activities among members of the cult groups.

The violent cult activities usually championed by students of both secondary schools and tertiary institutions in the state, also involved artisans like bricklayers, okada and tricycle operators among others.

Following intelligence reports, the state police command said in Ilorin Friday that it had put in place adequate security measures throughout the state to check the development, describing it as unacceptable.

The state Police Commissioner, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, in a statement called on parents and guardians to monitor the activities of their children and wards.

He advised students to shun any suspicious gathering of young men and women in their environments and report every suspicious movements and activities to the police.

The statement read, "Credible intelligence report available to the command indicates that some criminal elements with different identities have concluded plans to disrupt the peace and tranquility currently existing in Kwara state, on 7/7/2019 in the guise of making the anniversary of cultism in the state.

"The commissioner of police, Kwara state, Ag CP Kayode Egbetokun, finds this development unacceptable and has put in place adequate security measures throughout the state.

"He is also using this medium to call parents and guardians to monitor activities of their children and wards.

"Students generally are advised to shun any suspicious gathering of young men and women in their environments and report any suspicious movements and activities of criminal elements to the police through the following phone numbers- 09033871133,07015338157,and 08070734277."

It advised members of the public to go about their lawful endeavours without any fear of molestation.
