Tailor Made Constitutional Amendments Inimical to Peace. -Igbomina Conference
The National Assembly has been challenged to over haul the 1999 constitution to meet the wishes and aspirations of majority of the people in order to ensure the continued existence of a united Nigeria. Addressing participants at a constitutional Review meeting held at ESGEE Hotel, Iludun-Oro in Irepodun local government area of Kwara State, Mr. Olaitan Oyin-Zubair declared that a tailor made amendments to the constitution will only aggravate the worsening situation of the nation.
The National Coordinator of Igbomina Conference opined that a comprehensive over hauling of the Statue will be appropriate in view of array of socio-political problems plaguing the nation. Mr. Oyin-Zubair Stated the expectation of the people under the constitutional amendment include genuine process of correcting the lopsidedness in the distribution of resources either through creation of political unit of State or local Government areas. He declared also that the crisis in many parts of the country were as a result of inequalities in resource distribution, poverty and denial of minority rights, which he said, is a national question begging for an answer.
“All over the country there has been one form of violence and or agitation by one group against the other on perceived dominant groups' marginalization of the weak. As a matter of fact the struggle of the minorities against oppression is as old as Nigeria itself”, he stated.
He pointed out that it was unfortunate that no government has been able to effectively provided an answer to the problem of the minority and their frustration which according to him, had led to violence in many parts of the country.
Mr. Oyin-Zubair mentioned that there was the need to realign sub ethnic groups with same ancestral roots and geographical contiguity wishing to join their kith and kin in a state of their choice. He also called on the National Assembly to guide itself by the principles of Willinck Commission on Minority Rights and Justice Irikefe Panel on state creation.
Speaking at the occasion, the chairman of Oro Descendants Union, Prince Jide Titiloye commended efforts on unification and sect determination project of Igbomina people of Kwara and Osun state. He assured the movement of the unqualified support of Oro people to Igbomina'a Project.
The meeting was attended by delegates across Igbomina land. They include Chief. Sir Ayodele Oyinloye, Prof. M.A. Afolayan, Chief. S.O Adebayo, Chief S.G Olaoye (Board of Trustees of Asepo Omo Igbomina) Dr. H.B. Oyedepo and Chief Mrs. Modupe Ogunkoya, Iyalode of Oke-Ila among others.
