State Police not Financially Feasible - Gov. Ahmed
Against the recent clamour for state police in the country, Kwara State governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, has said that no matter the desirability of the idea, it is not financially feasible in the current nation’s economic situation.
Speaking with journalists in Ilorin at the weekend, the governor said that the Nigeria police should be strengthened with proper funding to meet up with the present challenges.
"State police is desirable to the extent of advance society, especially when you look at Nigeria that has population of over 150 million people and when you look at the current level of policing as we have it today vis a vis the level of crime, level of challenges of insecurity and other areas. But at the same time, the current political, financial and social situation we have found ourselves will require to be put into serious cognisance before taking that big step of moving towards creating different levels of police.
"My own biggest grouse on the issue of state police is that I am looking at the angle of the current inability of the government to fund police adequately.... States are currently under sincere pressure of not being able to meet with their various expenditure needs. So, you can imagine if we are to create a new expenditure line to join the current expenditure pressure," he said.
Governor Ahmed said the FG should come up with a platform to see how to create strong Nigeria Police that would be properly funded to meet up with the challenges as being seen in the nation’s various security levels.
The governor, who said there is a huge gap in previous and present funding system for Nigeria Police to enable them discharge their duties effectively, added that Nigeria Police should be completely restructured, adding that a new technology should be developed to drive the Police.
