A week-long free obstetric fistula surgery organised by the Kwara Government commenced on Monday at Sobi Specialist Hospital, Ilorin, the Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Kayode Issa, announced.

Issa made the announcement at a brief meeting with Dr Sa'ad Idris, a visiting surgeon and head of Engender Health Organisation.

He explained that the exercise was meant for women, who suffered leakages of urine and faeces as a result of prolonged and obstructed labour.

The commissioner, who was represented by the permanent secretary in the ministry, Dr Mustafa Abdullai, reiterated the government's commitment toward improving and enhancing health care services for the people.

He said that government was intensifying efforts to ensure effective healthcare service delivery to the people of the state.

The commissioner assured the visiting surgeon and his team of ceaseless support from the government in a bid to raise the standard of healthcare service delivery in the state.

Also speaking with NAN, the Chief Medical Director of Sobi Specialist Hospital, Dr Stephen Arigidi, said that the patients were expected to come from many parts of the country for the surgery.

It would be recalled that a similar free surgery was carried out at the same hospital in February.
