Milo BB Championship: Ilorin Defeats Lagos, to Face Ondo
Three-Time winners, Yejide Girls Grammar School, Ibadan, yesterday in the ongoing 14th Milo Secondary Schools Basketball championship, lost 21-30 to defending champions, Queen of the Rosary Secondary School, Gboko, Benue State, in a group A game played at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos.
The two-time champions, Queen of the Rosary, which had earlier defeated St. Jude's Girls Secondary School, Bayelsa State 25-18, have thus qualified for the semi-final of the competition billed for Friday. Yejide Girls would today face another embattled side and 2011 finalist, St.Jude's Girls in a must win game to advance in the competition, as Asaba Girls Grammar School, Delta State, confront Government Senior Secondary School, Taraba State in the last group game.
In group B, Ajigbeda Girls Senior High School, Lagos State pipped Government Senior Secondary School, Taraba State 36-30 to also qualify for the semi-final.
In the boys category, Government Secondary School, Ilorin, Kwara State stunned homers as they defeated International School University of Lagos 36-35 in an exciting game.
The Ilorin lads would today face Greater Tomorrow College, Ondo State, which had lost to UNILAG boys in a last group game.
Meanwhile, Ahmadiyya College, Kano State, has also qualified for the semi-final of the competition having defeated Government Secondary School, Minna 48-33. The Kano lads had on Tuesday dumped St. Augustine's Seminary, Ebonyi State 42-33.
President of the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF), Mallam Ibrahim Muhammed, in a chat with Tribunesports in Lagos, disclosed that all the 12 teams will be registered for various international competitions across the globe to further expose the players to the rudiments of the game.
"The winners of this competition will represent Nigeria at 2013 World School Basketball Championship in Cyprus while the second to the sixth places teams would participate in school tournaments in the United States, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa and Kenya respectively," he said.
