Smoking Aggravates Low Sperm Count - Prof Jimoh
CIGARETTE and marijuana smokers formed the highest per cent age of men with low sperm counts in Nigeria, a professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin, Abdulgafar Jimoh, has said.
Besides, Jimoh said 14 per cent of the men in this category seen at the general fertility clinic are azoospermic (suffering from infertility disorder of no sperm count at all), while those with low sperm count accounted for 50 per cent.
The don, who disclosed this yesterday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, while delivering the 111th series of the Inaugural Lecture of the university, warned men with protruding bellies of the looming infertility problems degenerating to sexual dysfunctional experiences.
At the event moderated by the outgoing Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ishiaq Oloyede, Jimoh canvassed early marriage in the country as couples who married late in life stood the risks of infertility just as he recommended good dietary system in men towards boosting their sperm counts.
Speaking on 'Different Strokes for Different Folks but Some Couples do Have Them,' Jimoh noted that the over reliance of Nigerians on the usage of generating sets with their attendant pollution problems could not be divorced from increasing cases of infertility among couples in the developing nations of the world.
