Kwara assembly plans stiffer penalty for kidnappers

Date: 2016-10-26

The Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly, Dr. Ali Ahmad, on Tuesday said the state Assembly would prescribe stiffer punishment for kidnappers and ritualists in the state.

He stated that the Assembly would review laws on kidnapping and human rituals to ensure severe punishment for culprits in the state.

While reading the resolution of the House at the floor of the Assembly, the Speaker said the review of the related laws became necessary because the punishment prescribed by the existing laws were not severe enough to serve as deterrent to others.

According to him, the punishment in the current laws was weak to tackle the current security challenges in the state.

He urged the House Committee on Ethics, Judiciary and the Director, Legal Department to take a look at the current laws and report to his office within a week.

The Speaker also urged the security agencies in the state to design security architecture to nip the problems in the bud.

He also enjoined the state government to give necessary support to the security agencies in tackling the menace.
