Court remands Man over robbery in Kwara

Date: 2016-08-27

An Ilorin Magistrate Court on Friday remanded a 36-years-old driver, Mohammed Mamudu for an alleged armed robbery at a female hostel in University of Ilorin (Unlorin), Kwara State.

According to Police First Information Report (FIR), the suspect who has no fixed address perpetrated the alleged offence alongside four others who are still on the run.

The case reported at 'F' Police Division Tanke, Ilorin by one Mohammed Ibrahim Ola of security unity in Unilorin, was later transferred to the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Police headquarters, Ilorin, for discreet investigation.

The accused was arraigned for two count charges of Criminal Conspiracy and Armed Robbery contrary to section 6B, 1 (2) of Robbery and Firearm (Special Provision) Act, CAP RII Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The FIR alleged that the suspect and four others jumped into the female hostel in Unilorin and "attacked them with gun and dangerous weapons and cart away their valuable properties."

In process of searching for the armed robbers, the Police said the suspect was arrested with the stolen property and a cutlass found in his possession.

"Investigation conducted at the CIID, Ilorin, revealed that Mohammed Mamudu and others at large are the armed robbers who robbed the victims of their properties," the FIR alleged.

The Police Prosecutor, Ayeni Gbenga told the court that investigation was still in progress, aimed at arresting other fleeing suspects for subsequent prosecution alongside the first suspect.

He opposed the bail of the accused on grounds that the offences allegedly committed are rampant in the society, adding that his bail would likely tamper with ongoing police investigation.

In his ruling, Magistrate M.K Aluko ordered that the suspect should be remanded at Federal Prison Custody, Mandalla. The case was, however, adjourned till September 5, 2016 for further mention.
